Why The Amaryllis Is A Versatile Choice
During the Holiday season, you’ll find Amaryllises (hippeastrums) in many living rooms, but why is the Amaryllis so connected to the Holiday season even though Amaryllises are available in the months September to April?
The reason the flower is so popular around the Holidays has to do with the many styling options and the colors of their blooms. The red color of the Amaryllis is very decorative and a great addition to a holiday décor.
Amaryllis are great to use in centerpieces
You've likely thought through what you're serving to your guests for the Holidays, but you’ll also need to consider the table décor. Guests will enjoy the food and at the same time be looking at your beautiful holiday centerpiece.
Did you know the Amaryllis bulb is a versatile choice for brightening up your home year-round?
Amaryllises can be grown successfully year-round and bloom again. As long as they receive proper care of course.
What else can you do with them?
Decorate the bulbs! Try covering the bulb with decorations and place them on a (side) table.
Place an Amaryllis in the bedroom! You can really make your bedroom bloom in style by adding some florals into it. It’s great because they're not permanent, but they're real and add life (and a little bit of romance) to a room.
We have bags of 5 or 10 Amaryllis bulbs ready to ship from our (ware)house, to yours.
Plant them, or create your natural look repurposing an existing vase!
Some Amaryllis FAQ’s
What is the best way to take care of a potted Amaryllis bulb?
A good sized pot for planting the Amaryllis bulb is the first step. The container may be clay, ceramic or plastic, but should have drainage holes in the bottom. The bulb should have about 2 inches of room around the sides. Leave the top third of the bulb uncovered. This plant does not want to be completely covered in soil.
Amaryllis should be kept in a well-lit room. Rotating the bulb every couple of days will help it grow straighter. As soon as the flowers start to open, move the pot to a cooler (about 62 degrees) area, out of direct sunlight. This will add bloom time to your Amaryllis.
How often should I water my potted Amaryllis?
Little watering is necessary until the bud and stem appears, then you’ll need to water more often. Care should be taken not to over-water. Adding a small amount of water about once a week is more than enough.
How much water do I add to a Giant Amaryllis in a glass vase?
We recommend to have the water level at a maximum height of the bottom of the bulb. Any higher than that and the bulb may start to drown and go bad. There is no need to water them after that. Amaryllises are impressive organisms, with most of the water and nutrients the flowers will need for the season already present inside the bulb.
The initial watering is just to give them a little help, should they need it. Although keeping a bit of water at the bottom of the bulb, just enough to cover the roots, can help the growth of longer stems, there would be a heightened risk of mold. So if you choose to water more frequently, take out any decoration covering the bottom of the bulb and be on the lookout for mold. If it develops, gently rinse it off with tap water and dab it with a paper towel.
What about Waxed Amaryllises?
Waxed Amaryllis do not require any water because the bulbs contain all the water and nutrients they need to flower. Simply place them on a tabletop or any other flat surface in your home. They should be kept in a well-lit room while avoiding direct sunlight and again, rotating the bulb every couple of days will help it grow straighter!
Can waxed Amaryllises bloom again?
If you want to try to save and replant your Waxed Amaryllis bulb, check out this video from Garden Answer on how to extract and plant the bulb. It is a little trickier and not guaranteed to work, but it sure is a fun and educational project!
